The rain had been falling for nine days when the lights in the valley began, one by one, to go out. Nobody in Cedar Hollow said it aloud, but everyone was watching the old lantern house on the ridge.

Mara pulled her coat tight and climbed. The path was slick with fir needles, and the creek beside it had grown loud enough to drown out her own footsteps.
